DESCRIPTION

The first European presence in the Youngstown New York area was likely Etienne Brule, Samuel de Champlain's fearless and intrepid scout and explorer. This land belonged to the Seneca people and in 1615 he passed through their territory along the Niagara River. The area remained under French control until the British defeated the French in North America.

Youngstown was named after John Young who established a trading post here about 1809. The village grew as laborers were drawn to the area by work at nearby Fort Niagara. During the War of 1812, Youngstown was destroyed by the British in retaliation for burnings on the Canadian shore.

Rebuilt following the war, the village and area prospered. The climate is conducive to fruit crops, the proximity to Lake Ontario gave access to markets and a fishing industry developed.

Today, this lovely, quiet village lives up to its reputation as the "best small village in western New York".

APPROACHES

Youngstown New York lies approximately 1 nm upstream from the mouth of the Niagara River. As you would expect, the river has a strong current considering that over 4 million cubic feet/110,000 cubic metres of water pours over Niagara Falls every minute! The current is manageable but it does require you to be focused as you navigate the river. Some sediment is carried out of the river resulting in some shoaling about 2 nm NW of the river mouth.

Approximately .75 nm from the river mouth is a buoy with a Fl GREEN light and bell, marked "G3". Leave that to your port side and come in on the Niagara On The Lake Range of 143.3oT. It will bring you safely into the river, avoiding any shoals.

Once inside, as you pass the US Coast Guard station on your port, alter course to approxiamtely 126oT and follow for about .25 nm until you reach the Q YELLOW "A" buoy. Again, alter course to about 150oT and follow for about .3 nm to arrive at the Youngstown Yacht Club.

NOTE: Do not underestimate the current. Have your main anchor (with lots of scope) ready to let go if necessary.

THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT

A major tourist attraction in Youngstown New York is Fort Niagara Nearly 300 years old, it has witnessed history played out before its walls. The three flags flying recall the three nations it has served - France, Great Britain and the United States. It is well worth the visit with historical re-enactments, static displays and musketry demonstrations.

The last weekend in July sees the YYC Level Regatta. This is a world class sailing event that attracts hunderds of boats. The weekend party is also described as world class (rumour has it that it was on the Rolling Stone's short list of top 10 parties world wide).
