DESCRIPTION Wilson NY is a very popular destination for boaters, both American sailors from the east and Canadians from the Toronto-area and points further northeast. Its easy to reach and easy to identify as well. As a harbor, it is a perfect refuge as its vitually land-locked.The village was established in 1818. The waters around Wilson have always been well-known as excellent fishing grounds. |
APPROACHES The approaches to Wilson NY are clear from all directions. Its easy to raise Wilson. As you draw near, to the east 12 mi / 19 km is the 612' stack of the Somerset/Kintigh Generating Station. In clear weather, it is visible approximately 29 nm offshore on good weather. Closer in, approximately 3 nm west, are two silos (charted). If you are coming from the west, there are charted hazards between 1.25 and 3.75 nm west of the channel entrance. Coming from the east, note that the charted depths offshore are shallow, Its prudent to keep well offshore as you approach the channel entrance. The channel entrance itself lies between tow parallel seawalls. There is a Fl RED light mounted on the end of the west seawall. Once you have cleared the seawalls and are inside the harbor, follow the well-marked channel. Outside the channel, the water is shallow and groundings are not uncommon. |
MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES NOTE: Charts show a public dock inside the harbor on the east side. This is a seawall in front of the sewer treatment plant. There are reported rocks or rock cribs lurking just below the surface. DO NOT attempt to use this space. Wilson Boatyard Marina (716) 751-9202 VHF 68 Wilson Boatyard is located on the first channel on your port after you clear the harbor entrance. It has about 40 slips with 10 set aside for transient sailors. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline). There are water, power, television and telephone hookups at each slip. Engine and mechanical repair and maintenance services are available as are fiberglass and electronics repairs service. There is a haulout facility. There are restrooms and showers and laundry services. Amenities include a swimming pool, hot tub, childrens' play area and picnic areas. There is internet access. Tuscarora Yacht Club (716) 751-9975 VHF 68 TYC is immediately on your bow as you come down the entrance channel. The club has about 150 slips and makes approximately a dozen available for transient sailors. There is a fuel dock (gasoline only) and a pump-out station. There is water and power available at each slip. The clubhouse has restrooms, showers and kitchen facilities to use. There is a childrens' playground, picnic areas and BBQ grills. There is internet service. Wilson Yacht Club (716) 751-6063 VHF 16 This small yacht club has 48 slips and offers transient cruisers dockage on an 'as available' basis. Water and power are available dockside. The clubhouse has restrooms and showers. There are picnic and BBQ facilities. Moyer's Marina (716) 751-9338 Moyer's is located next to Wilson Yacht Club. It may have 1 or 2 transient slips available. It has a fuel dock (gasoline only). There are restrooms and showers. They also have picnic areas and BBQ grills Sunset Bay Marina (716)751-6466 VHF 68 This marina is next in line along the bay shore on the south side. This is a large, full-service marina with over 150 slips. Approximately 15 are available for transient sailors. There is a fuel dock (gasoline only). They have a marine maintence shop fully capable of carrying out engine repairs and maintenance, as well as mechanical, electrical, fiberglass and hull repairs. Amenities include restrooms and showers, a swimming pool, a bar and grill and close access to parkland with picnic areas and playground facilities. Internet access is available. Island Yacht Club (716) 751-9978 IYC is located on Sunset Bay Marina property. It is a small club with slips available for transients on an 'as available' basis. There is water and power dockside. The clubhouse has restrooms, showers, laundry facilities and kitchen facilities. There are picnic areas and BBQ grills. Internet access is available. Wilson-Tuscarora State Park (716) 751-6361 The state park, about 475 acres / 192 ha, is located to west of Wilson NY, at the end of Tuscarora Bay. It has about 10 slips on a '1st come - 1st serve' basis. The videophone for customs reporting when clearing into the United States is located here. There is no fuel dock but there is a pump-out station. Water and power are available as are restrooms and showers. The park has walking trails, beaches, picnic areas and playgrounds. Anchorage It is possible to anchor out at the west end of Tuscarora Bay. |

It offers engine repair services for gasoline engines as well as electrical, fiberglass, hull and prop repairs. As the name suggests, they will come to your boat . PLACES TO EAT Wilson Boathouse Restaurant, located at the marina is a very popular pub and restaurant. Its menu features seafood, steaks and ribs all served on a tri-level patio overlooking the harbor. There is docking for restaurant patrons. Wilson House Restaurant (not to be confused with the Wilson Boathouse Restaurant) is located in the village. It has a varied menu with an Italian flavour and diners can enjoy indoors or a lovely outdoor, screened porch. Brownie's Custard Stand is a long-time favourite. Lots of fast food items but it's best known for its terrific ice cream. |
THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT Wilson NY is a place to slow down and just relax. The state park has lovely beaches and there are pleasant walking trails.
