DESCRIPTION Although the town of Silver Bay MN has been established for many years, the marina is relatively new. Privately owned, it opened in 1999 as a much-needed Harbor of Refuge. This is am important facility along a coastline that offers few shelters when Lake Superior turns angry. The town of Silver Bay Minnesota is located about 3 mi/5 km away. APPROACHES The approaches to Silver Bay MN are clear from all directions. Silver Bay has long been a commercial harbor, shipping millions of tons of iron pellets, known as taconite. The harbor of refuge was constructed on the west side of Silver Bay's west breakwater. - a breakwater that ends on Pellet Island. Pellet Island is marked with a Fl GREEN light, visible about 5.8 nm offshore. A spur breakwater running SW from the west breakwater encloses the shallow bay, creating the harbor of refuge. The entrance is well-marked with three sets of RED/GREEN lighted buoys. The SW end of the spur breakwater is marked with a RED daymark. Rounding that point, the marina will be dead ahead. |

MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES Silver Bay Marina (218) 226-3121 VHF 16 Silver Bay Marina has 108 slips with 40 set aside for transient sailors. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline) and a pumpout station. Water and power are available at each slip. The modern marina building has restrooms, showers and laundry facilities. There is a lounge area and deck to relax on. There is also WIFI internet access. The marina can arrange for transportation into Silver Bay to a grocery store for provisions. Other amenities include a childrens' playground, picnic areas and BBQ grills. |
