DESCRIPTION Port Elgin Ontario is a delightful town with a harbour that was purpose-built for recreational sailors and vessels. The town is renowned for its spectacular sunsets. It is a great place for a cruising sailor to stop over. There are lots of shops along its pleasant streets which can meet most if not all your needs as you cruise the coastline. |
APPROACHES The approaches to Port Eligin Ontario are clear regardless of the direction from which you come. Make sure that you stay offshore 2-3 nm as there are a number of charted obstructions. Set a course to the Fl RED marker buoy "VC2". This light marks Logie Rock. From "VC 2". alter course to approximately 130o to pick up "VC 3" which is the head of the buoyed channel into Port Elgin Harbour Marina. Once inside the channel, there are range markers giving a bearing of 109o. Follow this range bearing into the marina. It is important to watch your course carefully as there is a charted shoal to the north of the channel. The harbour entrance is between 2 seawalls with a Fl GREEN on the north pier and a Fl RED on the south pier. |
MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES Port Elgin Harbour Marina (519) 832-6535 VHF 68 Port Elgin Harbour Marina is the only marina available. This is a large marina with 274 slips. About a dozen are set aside for transient sailors. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline) and a pumpout station There is water and pwer dockside There are restrooms, showers and laundry facilities The marina also has a motel and cottages. There is also a childrens' playground. The beaches are very close and there are lots of opportunities to swim, sun bathe and picnic. There is no internet service at the marina but there should be at the public library. Port Elgin Yacht Club PEYC may have some slips available for transient sailors. |
REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE, PROVISIONING, BANKS/ATM's There are no repair or maintenance services at Port Elgin Harbour Marina. Redline Marine, also located in town, provides repair and maintenance services. United Marine will come to your boat to carry out repair/maintenance work. There are several grocery stores in the area. Legault's Independent Grocery Strore is certainly large enough to meet your provisioning needs. You will need a car to get there. There are three banks with ATM's in Port Elgin. TB Bank is probably the closest. |
MEDICAL SERVICES Dr Earl Medical Clinic (519) 832-9600 is a small clinic in town, staffed with 6 doctors. The nearest hospital is Saugeen Memorial Hospital (519) 797-3230, located about 5 mi/8 km north in the town of Southampton. There are several pharmacies in Port Elgin. Wardrop Pharmacy (519) 832-2015 is the closest to the marina. |
PLACES TO EAT Beachside Cafe offers burgers and other summer fare, right on the beach. Andre's Swiss Country Dining offers excellent European cuisine in a lovely, relaxed setting. The Wismer House is a popular pub with the usual pub fare and live entertainment. The Lord Elgin is well-known locally for its seafood and fish and chips. THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT One of the main appeals of Port Elgin Ontario are the great beaches. The town is a perfect place just to slow down and enjoy. There are concerts in the band shell every Sunday evening. If you like cars, every Thursday night is Cruisers Crise Nite with cars, rock and roll and a whole lot of fun.
