DESCRIPTION Ontonagon MI takes its name from the Ojibwa word for 'bowl' or 'bowl-shaped'. First settled in the 1830's, Ontonagon was a center for mineral exploration - especially for copper. By the late 1800's, Ontonagon had also become a lumbering center and the harbor served a votal role in getting both refined copper and timber shipped out. Copper is still refined here and the village has also become a year-round tourism center. As with any community along this rugged coastline of Lake Superior, the scenery here is stunning and varied.
