DESCRIPTION Mitchells Bay is located in the NE corner of Lake St. Clair. It is a low-lying, marshy area, in many ways unchanged for centuries. Its marshes and sloughs are home to untold thousands of resident and migratory water fowl and its a nature-lovers heaven. It is also a very shallow region and its flat, featureless panorama requires competent navigation and careful piloting. But ... the effort is well worth it. This one of the finest fishing grounds in North America for smallmouth bass and pickerel as well as a superb area for birdwatching. Quiet and lush, this is a great area to practice the traditional sailor's pastime of gunkholing! |
APPROACHES The shoreline here is flat and featureless. Mitchells Bay has a water tower which is visible for several miles offshore. FROM THE SOUTH AND WEST Begin your approach from RED marker "XE2"' located south of the entrance to Mitchell's Bay. Follow course 353oT past RED "XE4" (.67 nm) to RED "XE6" - a total distance of 1.8 nm. Now alter course to 045o and head to RED "XM4", a distance of 1.3 nm. At "XM4", alter course to 164oT and follow the channel in to Mitchell's Bay. An onshore Fl WHITE light marks the channel fairway. Once at RED marker "XM18", you can make your turn to port and enter the marina. FROM THE MOUTH OF THE ST. CLAIR RIVER Follow the channel to Q RED marker "M30". At "M30", alter course to 119oT and hold for approxiamtely 9 nm. This course will keep you south of a charted stake line. This stake line marks the boundary of the Walpole Island First Nations territory. When you are abeam the end of the stake line (located at 42o 26' 14 N 082o 31' 13" W), alter course to 100oT and proceed to RED "XE2". Alter course to 353oT and continue past RED "XE4" (.67 nm) to RED "XE6" - a total distance of 1.8 nm. Now alter course to 045oT and head to RED "XM4", a distance of 1.3 nm. At "XM4", alter course to 164oT and follow the channel in to Mitchell's Bay. An onshore Fl WHITE light marks the channel fairway. MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES Marine Park (519) 354-8423 VHF 68 Marine Park is a full-service municipal marina. There are 250 slips with transient docking for approximately 25 boats. There is a fuel dock (gasoline) and pumpout station. Water and power are available at most but not all slips. Although there is no repair facility at the marina, such services are located within the immediate vicinity and the marina staff can direct you to them. Expect repair and maintenance services to be basic or general in nature. There are washrooms, showers and laundry facilities on site. Amenities include picnic and BBQ areas and nearby playgrounds. There is a restaurant and convenience store on-site as well. There is internet access. |

MEDICAL SERVICES Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, the regional health services provider, operates Sydenham Campus, a full-service hospital in Wallaceburg. It is located about 10 mi/16 km inland. There are several pharmacies in Wallaceburg including Shoppers Drug Mart (519) 627-2202 and a pharmacy at the Walmart store. |
PLACES TO EAT There is a restaurant on-site at the marina. Parkside Restaurant is a small restaurant/pub located in the village. The menu focuses on fish, not surprising considering the excellent fishing on the bay and the lake. |
