DESCRIPTION Manitowoc WI sits at the mouth of the Manitowoc River. Native Americans call this home for hundreds of years before French fur traders arrived in the later 1600's. The Northwest Fur Company built a trading post here in 1795 and subsequently European settlers began to move into the area. Manitowoc was incorporated in 1836. By mid-century, it was a major shipbuilding center. That shipbuilding heritage continues to this day. Over 2 dozen submarines were built in Manitowoc during WWII. Today, Manitowoc is a thriving community with a diverse economy. Chief among its businesses is Manitowoc Malting Plant, owned by Anheuser-Busch brewries and the Burger Boat Company, a manufacturer of custom yachts. |
APPROACHES Manitowoc WI lies along the weat coast of Lake Michigan, on a shore of Maritime Bay. Approximately .75 nm offshore, are two marker buoys - GREEN and RED. Passing between them on a course of 245°T and 285°T will bring you to the harbor entrance, between two converging breakwaters. The entrance gap is about 400 ft/125 m wide. It is marked with an ISO WHITE light and horn on the north pierhead, visible about 8.4 nm and a Fl GREEN light on the south piergead, visible about 7 nm. The marina is located on the north side of the harbor. Continue straight into the harbor about .25 nm. You will see on your starboard side an unlit RED buoy and, a bit further ahead on your sdtarbord bow, a RED/GREEN bifurcation buoy. When you are approximaterly equal distance between them, alter course to approximately 355°T. This course will bring you down a channel marked by GREEN (port side) and RED (starboard side) unlit buoys. The marina entrance is on the south side of the marina basin, facing roughly southeast. The outer breakwater is marked with a Fl RED light while the inner breakwater is marked with a Fl GREEN light. |
MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES Manitowoc Marina (920) 682-5117 VHF 9, 16 Manitowoc Marina has 250 slips with about 4 dozen set aside for transients. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasline) and a pump-out station. This is a full-service marina capable of carrying out a wide range of engine, mechanical, electrical and hull repairs. They have a large parts department with an extensive inventory. Water and power hookups are available at the slips. There are restrooms, showers and laundry facilities.. There is also a lounge in the marina building which has a seond-story balcony overlooking the harbor. The is a well-equipped ships' store and internet is available throughout the marina. The marina has bicycles available for rent so you can get and explore the surrounding area. |

PLACES TO EAT The marina is close to the downtown and there are a number of interesting restaurants and pubs to sample. The Courthouse Pub is a well-known favorite. 8th and York has a very good local reputation. If you enjoy rock & roll or blues music, check out Rock N Blues Haus. Also downtown are Capone's Pub and Tijuana Rose Cantina, both serving good food. |
THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT Probably the number one attraction in Manitowoc WI is the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. This is one of the largest maritime museums on the Great Lakes. In particular, it honors Manitowoc 's shipbuilding past - especially as a builder of submarines during WWII. Its crown jewel is the completely refurbished submarine USS Cobia. Cobia did 6 war patrols, earning 4 battle stars and now serves as a permanent floating memorial. With prior arrangements, visitors can overnight on the sub and experience first-hand a taste of life on a combat submarine. The Museum has an outstanding range of maritime exhibits. The Rahr West Art Museum features a world-class art collection. In July, German Fest at the Manitowoc Pinecrest Historic Village keeps Manitowoc 's German heritage fresh. Manitowoc has a decades-old symphony orchestra that performs regularly. Manitowoc is also the western terminus of the Manitowoc WI - Ludington MI car ferry - the largest on the Great Lakes.
