DESCRIPTION In the 1830's, th government of of the colony of Upper Canada established a native settlement ay Manitowaning Ontario. Their goal was to induce local native peoples to abandon their traditional nomadic way of life and settle permanently in an agricultural community. By and large, the experiment failied. However, the community endured. Non-natine settlers moved in and Manitowaning became an important shipping port on northern Lake Huron. Today, Manitowaning is a quaint little village, off the beaten track - which makes it a perfect place for a cruising sailor to visit! |
APPROACHES Manitowaning lies at the head of Manitowaning Bay, a long, deep bay. From the West Coming from Little Current, pass to the north of Strawberry Island and follow a curing route to the south, picking up each of the charted buoys in turn. These buoys mark reefs so keep to the east of them. Once in the bay proper, follow a course of approximately 185°T to the village dock. The village is situated on the west side of the bay. From the East Coming from Georgian Bay, pass south of Partridge Island and, once in the bay, follow a course down the middle of the bay to the village dock. The village is on the west side of the bay. |

There are about 3 dozen slips for transient sailors There is a fuel dock and pumpout station. Power is available at the docks but not water. There are washrooms and showers. There is internet access. The downtown is a block from the marina. |
REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE, PROVISIONING, BANKS/ATM's There are no repair facilities in Manitowaning. However, the Dockmaster may be able to suggest local mechanics who could assist in an emergency. There is a Freshmart grocery store about 2 blocks from the marina. The Bank of Montreal has a branch with counter and ATM service. |

THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT The S.S. Norisle is a retired ferry that is permanently docked at Manitowaning. De-Ba-Jeh-Mu-Jig is a well-known and highly regarded theatre company. Founded in 1981, the company is the longest-running First nations theatre company in North America. The have performances throughout the summer. Nearby, is Wikwemikong First Nations community. It is home to the largest and oldest pow-wow in eastern Canada. Held Annually on Simcoe Day (Aug 1st long weekend), it attracts performers and visitors from across North America.
