DESCRIPTION Hammond IN was settled by German immigrants in the 1840's. Within 30 years, Hammond had become an industrialized center with a large and growing meat packing industry. Other industrial sectors soon developed including steel, chemical and commercial goods manufacturers. Although a separate municipality, Hammond IN today is part of the huge 'Chicagoland' urban region. Despite its industrialized nature, Hammond IN has preserved much of its turn-of-the-century, victorian architecture. Over $500 million dollars was invested in a complete redevelopment of its waterfront casino and harbor. It re-opened with nearly 1,000 slips. |
