DESCRIPTION Gary IN is located in the southeastern part of 'Chicagoland' - the huge Chicago metropolitan area. Gary was established in 1906 as the home of the United States Steel Corporation huge steel mill on Lake Michigan. Named for its chairman, it grew rapidly as the steel industry expanded. However, as a one-industry town, Gary's fortunes have risen and fallen with the fortunes of the stell industry.Today, Gary IN struggles with high unemployment and crime rates. The collapse of the housing market in the United States left approximately 1/3 of all houses vacant. Gary IN is a valuable harbor of refuge in a serious emergency. The harbor is privately owned by the United States Steel Company. It is very busy and care must be taken due to continual commercial use by large freighters. The harbor is completely open to the east. |
APPROACHES The approach for this harbor of refuge is from the east. The approaches are clear and unobstructed. The harbor is formed by a long, .5 nm breakwater at the mouth of a .87 nm canal. The breakwater curves out into Lake Michigan from the west side of the canal entrance. The tip of the breakwater is marked with a Fl RED visible 7.4 nm offshore. The mouth of the canal is marked with a F RED visible 5.8 nm and a F WHITE visible 6.4 nm. DO NOT enter this canal. |
