DESCRIPTION Named after the French city of Dunkerque, Dunkirk, NY was initially settled in the early 1800's. By the 2nd half of the century, it had become an important railroad hub and shipping center. This, in turn, lead to a burgeoning industrial base that carried the city through much of the 20th century. Today, Dunkirk NY is an attractive destination for cruising sailors. |
APPROACHES The approaches to Dunkirk NY are clear from all directions. The harbor is marked with the 3 stacks of the Dunkirk Generating Plant. At 310 ft / 94.5 m, they are visible in good weather for 20.6 nm. The stacks are lit at night. The harbor is protected by a seawall and the entrance is at the west end, by the power station. FROM THE WEST Sailor need to clear Point Gratiot. It is marked by the Dunkirk Light, an OCC WHITE light visible for 16 mi/13.4 nm. Clearing the Point, you will see a marker buoy - RED "N4" to the east. This buoy, and its counterpart GREEN "C3" mark the channel into the harbor. Follow a course of 133oT to pass through the breakwater. FROM THE EAST The harbor is open on the east side. However, the water depth range from 10 ft / 3 m to 1 ft/.3 m. For safety, stay on the outside of the breakwater until you reach the channel. It is marked by a pair of buoys - RED "N4" and GREEN "C3". Follow a course of 133oT to pass through the breakwater. Once through the breakwater entrance, alter course to approximately 115oT and follow the channel to the municipal pier. On either side of the municipal pier are basins with a Fl RED (on the west side) and a Fl GREEN (on the east side). Both of these basins are snug and well-protected. |
MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES Chadwick Bay Marina (716) 366-1774 VHF 16 Chadwick Bay Marina is located on the east side of the municipal pier. It is the main marina in Dunkirk NY. There are 419 slips with 40 set aside for transient sailors. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline) and pumpout station. There is water and power to 300 of the slips. There is a repair and maintenance facility which can carry out engine and mechanical repairs as well as electrical and fiberglass work. Showers and restrooms are available. There is a convenience store on-site. There is no internet access. Barts Cove Marina (716) 366-8243 VHF 16 Barts Cove Marina is located at the west end of Dunkirk harbor. There are a number of slips with about a half dozen set aside for visiting sailors. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline) and a pumpout station. There is water and power available dockside. They have maintenance and repair facilities for engines and mechanical systems, electronics and electrical systems. Restrooms and showers are available. There is an on-site convenience store and internet is available. Dunkirk Yacht Club (716) 366-9789 VHF 9, 16 DYC is located in the basin to the west of the municipal pier.There are about a dozen slips available for transient sailors from recognized yacht clubs. There is no fuel dock but there is a pumpout station. There is water and power at the slips. Restrooms and showers are available. There is no internet connection. |

PLACES TO EAT The downtown district of Dunkirk NY is adjacent to the harbor. There is a lovely boardwalk and from the boardwalk, there is easy access to restaurants and shops. Here are some favorites to check out. Demetri's On The Lake specializes in Greek cuisine with lovely views of the lake. Windjammers Restaurant is located in the Clarion Hotel on the harborfront boardwalk. It is a casual dining establishment. There is a seasonal dockside cade and bar which offers live entertainment. For Canadians especially, who need their 'fix', there is a Tim Hortons Coffee Shop at the east end of the harbor. There are lots more places downtown such as Mary's Deli, Jenna's 4th St. Cafe, and Holy Wong so there is no need to go hungry! |
THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT Dunkirk NY has a lovely waterfront park that compliments its boardwalk. There are specialty shops where you can browse. Annual events include the Music of the Pier concert series, the Wreck and Roll Festival that combines rock and roll music with virtual dive tours and the America's Grape Country Wine Festival.
