DESCRIPTION Collins Bay is officially part of the City of Kingston. But, it retains its own identity as a natural escape from Kingston's bustling waterfront. Located at the head of Collins Bay, it serves as a snug harbour. It is not ideal when storms blow in out of the south or south west. |
APPROACHES The entrance to Collins Bay is straightforward and hazard free. With the Brother Islands on your beam, turn north to enter the bay. Follow the curve of the shore, keeping somewhat west of the centre of the bay. As the bay curves to the starboard, be careful not to crowd the eastern shore - there are rocky shoals and a wreck lying about 200m / 700' offshore. |
MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES Collins Bay Marina 613-389-4455 VHF 68 Collins Bay Marina is located at the head of the bay on the east side. It is a large, well-protected marina with approximately 40 transient slips. Fuel (diesel & gas), water and pumpout are available. Other amenities include washrooms, showers, internet and picnic areas. A large grocery store is located within a 10-15 minute walk. LeMoine Point Conservation Area offers a network of hiking trails and a nearby municipal park has a playground, BBQ areas and a municipal beach. Collins Bay Yacht Club CBYC is located at Collins Bay Marina. There may be limited transiet slips available, provided on a reciprocal-club basis, depending on availability. Blue Woods Marina 613-634-1304 VHF 68 Blue Woods Marina is located across the bay, on the north shore, from Collins Bay Marina. It has 8-10 transient docks. It offers mechanical, engine, fibreglass and some canvas repairs. It also has a mobile engine repair service and on-call emergency service during regular business hours. Towing can also be arranged. There is no fuel available. Washrooms, showers and a picnic area round out its amenities. There is a small marine store on-site which carries a basic inventory of engine parts, rope, and cleaning supplies. Government Dock There is a small government dock located on the west side of the bay, north of Collins Creek. There are no facilities here. It is used mostly by local fishermen. |
REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE, PROVISIONING, BANKS/ATM's Marine Outfitters Inc. is a full-service chandlery carrying a wide selection of marine products. It is located on the west shore, just north of the government dock. Carl's Boat Shop provides mobile fibreglass and painting repair services. Emergency service response is available. A large supermarket is located a 10-15 minute walk from Collins Bay Marina. There is a pharmacy located here as well. Other shopping facilities can be located along the Bath Road leading towards Kingston. These include supermarkets, banks and a beer store. You would need a taxi to get to these places. There is also a municipal bus service into Kingston. There are several walk-in medical clinics in the are as well. |
MEDICAL SERVICES Kingston General Hospital (613-549-6666) serves Collins Bay. Rexall Pharmacy (613-384-4600) is close to the harbour. |
PLACES TO EAT There are two nearby restaurants. Several others are a little further afield and would require a taxi. The Chinese Palace The Chinese palace is a popular local restaurant that will also deliver to your boat! Bella Bistro This local Italian bistro offers a varied menu of pasta, pizzas, panini and meat dishes. It too will make delivery arrangements to your boat. A taxi ride will being you to more pubs and restaurants. McGinnis Landing This popular, longstanding favourite has a wide selection of good food and a relaxed, casual family atmosphere The Loyal Oarsman This pub serves traditional pub fare with some 2 dozen domestic and imported beers on tap to wash everything down. |
THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT Collins Bay is a place to relax. Rotary Park has playground facilities, a beach and picnic areas with BBQ's. Close by is LeMoine Point Conservation Area with its network of hiking trails - some of which link to the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail. The surrounding waters offer good sport fishing. For more 'big city' amenities, you could take a bus or taxi into Kingston to take in festivals, museums, galleries and shopping. If you treasure the quiet though, you may just want to lean back in your own cockpit and enjoy the peaceful view.
