DESCRIPTION Olcott NY is the largest port between Youngstown on the Niagara River and Rochester. Situated at the mouth of 18 Mile Creek, it is also a very popular destination for sailors in Canadian harbors from Burlington to Whitby. Tourism is an important element of Olcott's economy. Blessed by terrific fishing, Olcott attracts fishermen from all over eastern North America as well as overseas. This year an estimated 40-50,000 anglers will try their luck at catching some trophy-size salmon and trout. In 2012, Olcott NY was named the "Ultimate Fishing Town" by the World Fishing Network. Major festivals occur throughout the summer. |
APPROACHES The approaches to Olcott NY are clear from all directions. When the winds are out of the north, there can be a heavy swell which can make entry between the two long breakwaters quite challenging. The entrance to Olcott NY is marked by a Fl RED light visible approximately 6.3 nm offshore. Olcott Yacht Club is immediately inside the entrance on the west side. Once inside the river, Hedley Boat Company has slips on both sides of the river. The Town of Newfane has a marina immediately north of the bridge on the west side. Boats with a mast height of less than 49.2 ft/15 m can continue past the fixed bridge and find a quiet anchorage. |
MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES Olcott Yacht Club (716) 778-5915 VHF 16 OYC is located immediately inside the channel breakwater on the west wall. They have some slips available for transient sailors. If necessary, they have an arrangement with the Town of Newfane Marina, located on the west side of the creek, by the bridge. There is no fuel dock. There is a pumpout station. Water and power hookups are available at each slip. The clubhouse has restrooms and showers. There is a restaurant and bar with great views from the 2nd floor deck. Note: Only credit cards are accepted - no cash. There is a haulout facility. Hedley Boat Company (716) 778-7771 Located south of the Olcott Yacht Club, Hedley Boat Company has slips on both sides of the creek. There are approximately 20 slips for transient sailors. There is no fuel dock but there is a pumpout station. Water and power are available dockside. There are restrooms and showers. There is also a travel lift for haulouts. Town of Newfane Marina (716) 778-5462 VHF This municipal marina is located on the west side of 18 Mile Creek., just north of the fixed highway bridge. There are a number of slips available for transient sailors. There is no fuel dock but there is a pumpout station. Water and power are available at the slips. Restrooms and showers are also available. There are picnic areas and BBQ grills. |

PLACES TO EAT OYC has a restaurant on the 2nd floor of the club house with great views of Lake Ontario. In the village, check out the Lighthouse Grill and Spirit. The Mariner's Landing has a great 2nd floor balcony with tables that look out over the lake and Krull Park. |
THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT Olcott NY is a fishing enthousiast's dream. Thousands come here every year from all over eastern North America and points beyond, to enjoy the bounty of the waters around the village. In July, the jolly roger flies over Olcott during the annual Pirate Days. Later in the month, Old Olcott Days celebrate the history of the community. In August, Olcott Yacht Club hosts the Jazz Sea Sunset This popular fund-raiser for a childrens' park and often sells out. Mid-August is August Fest, a day-long community festival in nearby Newfane.
